Project Description
TOWNLAND was invited to participate in a Conceptual Master Layout Planning Competition for 1.45 sq km of land within the Suzhou Science and Technology Town (SSTT). The SSTT is a base for research, development and innovation established by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, the Jiangsu Provincial Government and the Suzhou Municipal Government. It is one of the ten major projects intended to position Suzhou as an International Scientific and Technological City and comprises a host of education, research and development, manufacturing and services related industries. TOWNLAND was awarded FIRST PRIZE for its Competition entry, and was subsequently commissioned by CLIENT to prepare the Urban Design Scheme and Urban Design Guidelines.
The winning scheme is based on the concept of low carbon and sustainable development. It emphasizes a return to nature and converts the Site into a green eco-valley featured by green buildings and wetland landscape. At the same time, it forms a combined pedestrian and cycling network integrated with featured open spaces. The issues of flexible land use and sustainable redevelopment of industrial areas are also addressed within the scheme.
