Townland Featured in Bombay Imagined | April 2022
Over the past decade, TOWNLAND has worked on many large-scale Master Planning and Urban Design Projects in Mumbai, India. Some of these Plans were approved, some are still undecided, and some will remain on the drawing board. The recently published book “Bombay Imagined” by Robert Stephens showcases the latter category in a beautifully illustrated history of the unbuilt City and tells the story of 200 unrealised urban visions from a long list of committed architects, planners, designers and visionaries. TOWNLAND’s Master Plan Vision for the Mumbai Port Area, developed in 2016, is one of them.
The 1,200 acre (486 ha) reorganisation, conceptualised at the invitation of the Mumbai Port Trust via an International Design Competition, proposed weaving more than a dozen kilometres of new public promenades along a previously inaccessible waterfront. TOWNLAND’s imagination of a brave new water world inspired Port Trustees and secured a position among the top three finalists” in the Competition.
As is all too often the case in Mumbai, this redevelopment Project has unfortunately been delayed by various hurdles and the future of Mumbai’s eastern waterfront remains uncertain.
