An Integrated Coastal Development

TOWNLAND was commissioned to plan a Regional Concept Master Plan for a comprehensive tourism resort development along a Site referred to as the “Route des Peches” (the Fishing Route) in the southern coastal region of Benin, in West Africa.  Of the total land area 1000 ha of land is to be developed for tourism and related uses. This land will need to be seamlessly integrated into the existing fabric of local villages, public beaches, forests and lagoons. The project is viewed as one of the most important ongoing initiatives for the development of the economy in Benin.

TOWNLAND is responsible for the Concept Master Plan and all key planning, urban design and landscape planning components.  The potential for sustainable and culture-based tourism along the coastline will integrate a wide range of different tourism uses and accommodations so as to promote the location to a wide range of travelers. The planning angle for the tourism development revolves around eight key aspects: respect, employment, education, community, ethics, flexibility, quality and creativity.
