A Premier Coastal City in China by 2030

TOWNLAND prepared a vision for the regional development of the east coast area of Lianyungang, Jiangsu Province, up to the year 2030.  The Vision  envisages the development of a first class coastal City with an advanced economy based on the further development of the port and industrial sectors and supported by enhanced logistics and tourism, and a sustainable and productive agricultural sector.

The Study aimed atstrategy formulation at three levels, namely (i) Strategic Development Planning which sought to define the development objectives, direction/positioning and development strategy for the 1,000km2 east coast planning area; (ii) Spatial Planning which set out the overall spatial arrangements of the planning area in the form of land use, transport and landscape plans; and (iii) Urban Design for 3 Key Areas focused on the New Town of Binhai (147km2) and new port and industry zones at Guanhekou and Zhewang.

TOWNLAND’s vision for Lianyungang was for a prosperous Garden City by the Sea, one where economic growth did not compromise the quality of life for residents and one where the environmental impacts of urban growth were minimized.

Binhai New Town was proposed as a major urban area for living, entertainment, business, recreation and education. The design of the New Town, focused partially on reclamation, engaged strongly with the waterfront and created a series of formal islands intersected by large bodies of fresh water. Each island was designed with its own unique character and function.
