Pioneering Preservation Study in Wanchai

TOWNLAND led this pioneer Study for the HKHS and URA which aimed at conserving several listed buildings in Wan Chai South through comprehensive after-use proposals. The conservation proposals sought to,inter alia,(i) maximise the heritage value of the sites, (ii) enhance local identity, (iii) maximise public use and attraction, (iv) create a “node” to help revitalise the surroundings, (v) service community needs and (vi) be compatible with the surroundings. The Heritage Buildings were proposed for commercial uses built around the themes of “Tea” and “Medicine” to reflect past uses within the Scheme Area and in the neighbourhood. Landscaped Open Space was proposed to create a multi-function activity space for both passive recreation and the hosting of formal community events, to inject new life into the area.

The Study also considered the development of a wider “heritage node” for the District by linking and integrating existing heritage monuments and attractions through theming, comprehensive streetscape design and landscape proposals.

TOWNLAND was responsible for study direction and management, land use planning, landscape planning, social impact assessments and public consultations, as well as traffic impact assessment, environmental assessment, financial assessment and the preparation of compensation and rehousing packages for tenants.
