TCL prepared the conceptual planning and design scheme for 3,000 ha of land in Western Suzhou adjacent to the tourist and biodiversity hotspot, Taihu Lake. The core function of the Study was to allow for urban development and tourism in this sensitive lakeside area, but limit its impact on the environment, so that a sustainable and flexible growth pattern emerges over time. Thus, the MLP essentially illustrates six self-sufficient urban villages focussed around the Lake, which accommodate up to 50,000 people, with the potential to allow for a further 30,000 people to be accommodated in the future if demand exists. A key issue of the Study was the implementation of planning mechanisms to protect the scenic beauty of the area prior to development taking place. TCL was the recipient of the THIRD PRIZE.
