City Walls are scenic features which are ideally enjoyed intimately, for instance in a park setting, but also from a distance, as a panoramic experience. Reflection into a river also underlines the enjoyment of these features.
It is proposed to seize these opportunities, by means of new parks alongside the City Walls and through the establishment of a Tourist Village, at the opposite side of the Zhang River. From the elevated Viewing Point at this Tourist Village, a perfect view is possible of the Zhang River Pedestrian Bridge, the City Wall and the “3 Rivers - 6 Banks”. The City Wall area is to undergo a programme of intensive urban renewal : park areas need to replace derelict residential and community premises near to the City Wall at the Zhang River side; and new residential uses need to be interwoven into the urban fabric of the central zone of the area. This new development must be sensitive to (and take inspiration from) the historic setting.
