Deep Bay Water Quality: Regional Control Strategy Study, Hong Kong
Project Description

Deep Bay is a body of estuarine water and intertidal mudflats lying on the border between Hong Kong and the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone in China. The Bay, which has a total area of around 2,300 ha. is relatively shallow with an average depth of 2.9m. The intertidal mudflats and the adjacent Mai Po Nature Reserve and fish ponds have recently been designated as a wetland of international ecological significance under the Ramsar Convention. Water quality in the Bay has been declining, largely as a result of human activities within catchments draining into the Bay. The Study provided detailed hydrographic and water quality models for the Bay for use in the assessment of impacts arising from future developments around the Bay both in Hong Kong and China. Upon determination of the assimilative capacity of the Bay, strategic options were developed to manage the water quaility in the catchment. TCL was responsible for all land use planning inputs.
