A Conceptual Master Plan and a set of urban design guidelines for a modern upscale University City which reflects the cultural and historical background, the special features of the upper course of the Yangtze River and the character of the highest-level education area of Chongqing. The proposed University City of 20 km2 in the western part of Chongqing consists of 8 universities, R&D facilities, sports and recreation areas, residential developments and shared community facilities for students, local residents and workers. A radiological pattern is applied to form a convenient road network and accessible green belts. Landmark buildings, architectural articulations and harmonious material colours are proposed to enhance the identity of the unique University City.
